"Thank you so much, Mr. Lomber,” said David who realized that this place wasn’t so boring after all.

 Carrie ,David, Beth and Aaron went outside and sat on a bench.

What on earth could this poem mean?  David realized that this certainly was more than a poem. “It’s a real  riddle.”

“It’s a rhyming riddle we have to unravel,” Aaron said laughing.

“Let’s put our heads together and figure it out,” said David.

CHAPTER 5:
ONE THING AT A TIME

“You know, guys,” my teacher always told me that we should only take one step at a time,” David continued.

“What does that mean? ” Carrie asked David.

“It means that we have to think about only one clue at a time and not think of the next until we understand  the first.”

“So, let’s look at the poem.”

David read the first two sentences.

“This tree is planted, now it’s smaller,
Some  day it will grow much taller.”
