So---- what happened in 4th grade Suzie-Jean?

In P.S. 121, the children loved to go outside to the school yard
after lunch.
The boys played ball and the girls jumped rope.

We always rushed through lunch to go outside.
We only had 50 minutes for lunch.

In those days we were served hot lunch.
We didn't like the lunches very much.
If we were lucky, we would have peanut butter sandwiches.
But there was always some soup that we didn't like.
We liked the milk.

Sometimes we only drank the milk.
That wasn't a good idea.
But we were in a hurry, and sometimes didn't like anything on
our tray.

I am ashamed to say that we threw out our food.

The teachers did not like the fact that we wasted food.

One day they made a new rule:

YOU MUST FINISH EVERYTHING ON YOUR LUNCH TRAY.

I was eating with my friends Janet and Diana.

We did not know about the new rule when we went to lunch.

That day they had orange jelly sandwichs and bean soup.

Oh Yuk!

We drank our milk and went to throw out everything else.

But a teacher was standing near the garbage pails.
We called her "the guard of the garbage."
She told us about the new rule.
She told us to sit down and finish EVERYTHING on the tray.

WHAT COULD WE DO?

I came up with the idea.

We crumbled the sandwiches into little pieces and spread them
on the floor.

We drank our milk and poured the bean soup into the small milk
carton.

Happily we went up to the garbage.

We were not happy long!

The guard of the garbage told us to sit down and finish our
MILK!!!!

How were we ever going to drink the bean
soup from the milk carton????

We sat and sat and sat and sat.

We were thinking and thinking and thinking.

Well, the problem was solved.

THE BELL RANG AND WE HAD TO GO BACK TO CLASS.

We never did go outside to play in the yard that day.

But at least we did not have to have the bean soup.

The funny thing is, these days I LOVE BEAN SOUP!

I don't remember what happened after that.
But they did not keep up the rule, that is for sure.
If they did, I would have remembered.

Kids--I think it is important NOT TO WASTE
FOOD.

Only put on your plate or tray what you can
eat.

Try to eat foods that are good for you.

In the story TATTLE-TALE-TILLIE, the children face the same problem.
But the other parts of the story are not the same as what happened to me. I never was a tattle-tale.
