UPPER CRUST

Bread was cooked in primitive ovens with a fire burning. The bread baked in these sorts of ovens would not bake evenly. The bottom of the bread would usually be burnt. The bread was divided according to status.

The servants would get the bottom burnt part of the bread. The members of the family would get the middle. The head of the family would get the UPPER CRUST.

UPPER CRUST was thus associated with high status.
