“What’s a legend, Mr. Lomber?” Carrie asked.

“ A legend is an old story about something that happened in the past. Sometimes the legend is true, sometimes not. Sometimes, only parts of the legend are true.  We have this legend about the pirate Captain Patch.”

“Was that his real name?” inquired Aaron.

“I doubt it,” replied Mr. Lomber. “ It is said
that he got into a duel with another pirate and had an injury to his eye. He had to wear a big patch, and that is probably why he was called Captain Patch. According to the legend,  his ship was called ‘The Crooked Flagstaff.’  ”

“Well, what about him? When did he live?  Did he have a treasure?”  David was getting very anxious to hear the rest of  the story.

“Captain Patch was said to have sailed The Crooked Flagstaff before the l820’s,” continued Mr. Lomber.  “And what a terror he was supposed to have  been.

He would sail his ship, stop other ships, and steal their gold and jewels or whatever else  was valuable  on board. If there really was such a person as Captain Patch, it is likely that he built up quite a treasure. According to the  story,  Captain Patch had a  big treasure chest which he buried somewhere not too far from where this Inn is standing.  Nobody  has ever found it. No one even knows for sure if this legend is true or not.  There is a poem, however, that is thought to have been written by Captain Patch. The poem is supposed to give clues to finding the buried treasure. The legend tells us that Captain Patch  also planted a tree. The tree is mentioned in the poem, and is connected to the buried treasure.”
