He told the others that they might find out if those flowers (if they are flowers) were in the garden  a long time ago, and perhaps that  is what Captain Patch meant  when he talked about  Mary, Mary in the poem he wrote.

“Well, my dears, there is only one way to find out.”

Mrs. Lomber went with the children to find her husband.

“Jeremy, the children want to see the section of the book  about the gardens. Do you recall anything about how the garden looked in the past?”

“No, I sure don’t remember, Maggie” Mr. Lomber replied to his wife’s question, “but there is one way to find whatever information is there.”

He left the room for a few moments and reappeared with the  big , old , book.

He flipped through the pages until he came to the section on gardening.

Not only were there descriptions of the kinds of plants and flowers in the garden dating back to the time the pirate was supposed to have lived, but there were drawings too.

“Cool, we’re getting somewhere!” David shouted, as Carrie started hopping up and down, shouting “yes, yes, yes!”

“Now let me see,” said Mr. Lomber, “ we have to find the descriptions of the gardens in the early l800s. Actually, there  are no specific dates, but general information about that time  period. What are we looking for exactly?”

Beth told him that they are most interested to know whether there were any Silver Bells, Cockle Shells and Little Maids growing in the past.
