CINDERELLA
Version from the Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm

..A rich man had a beautiful and kind wife and daughter. One day the wife became ill. She called her daughter to her bedside and told her to always be good and kind. After her mother died, the young girl cried each day.

..The following spring, the rich man remarried. His second wife had two daughters. The daughters were very pretty , but like their mother, they had cruel hearts. They treated their step-father's first daughter terribly. They made her work all day. She had to sleep near the
fireplace. She was called Cinderella because she because dusty from the ashes. Cinderella's father was completely ruled by his wife and did not object to the way Cinderella was treated.

..One day, the father decided to go to a fair held in the village. He asked his step-daughters what they wanted him to bring them. One said she wanted beautiful dresses. The other one wanted jewels. He asked Cinderella what she wanted. She asked for him to bring her the first twig that brushed against his hat on his way home. He brought home the items they asked for. Cinderella received a twig from a hazel bush.

..Cinderella planted the twig at her mother's grave. When her tears fell on the twig it started to grow, and finally became a most beautiful tree. Cinderella visited the grave every day.Three birds would fly down and give her whatever she wished for. She did not wish for very much.

..It happened that the King decided to give a festival which was to last three days. All the beautiful girls in the kingdom were invited so that his son, the Prince, could choose one for a bride.

..Cinderella begged her stepmother to allow her to go too. Finally, the stepmother said she could go but only after she picked some peas and lentils out of the ashes within two hours and then and put them in a bowl. The stepmother had put a lot of peas and lentils into the ashes thinking that Cinderella could not finish that task. But Cinderella called for some help:

"You pigeons, you turtledoves, and all you birds
beneath the sky, come and help me to gather."

..The birds came and within an hour, collected all the peas and lentils which were placed in a bowl. But the stepmother went back on her word. She told Cinerella that since she wore rags she would be a shame to the family, and therefore could not go to the festival.
