SIXPENCE

The sixpence coin during the
mid -19th century

A sixpence coin was a form of currency in England which is no longer used.

The sixpence was worth 6 pennies in the old British currency system.

The first sixpence coin was minted under King Edward VI in 1551. The last issue of the coin was in 1967, and was allowed to be used until 1980.

The decimal system has been adopted, and the shilling, which was worth 12 pence is no longer used. Today, the British pound is the basic currency, along with smaller denominations.

The sixpence has cultural significance. For example, it has been considered to be lucky for brides ,"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a sixpence in your shoe." It is referred to in many nursery rhymes, and
in expressions.
