I was a colonist livin' the high life,
Lovin' the empire as it's been,
But the Mother Country made some changes,
In my opinion a grievous sin.
For they're taxin' the sugar, the stamps, the tea,
Things that we buy they'll attach a fee.
They can tax themselves way over the sea,
But don't , oh don't ... oh don't tax me.
In 1763 a big war ended.
In America and Europe too..
The cost of the war is for England to bear,
The colonies can't afford payment due.
But they're taxin' the sugar, the stamps and tea ,
Everything they'll attach a fee.
They can tax themselves way over the sea,
But don't, oh don't , oh don't tax me.
I stand and declare 'neath the Liberty Tree,
Provide for the colonies, but don't tax me.
