When the troll came back, Grittel had nothing left to give him for spinning the straw into gold. The troll said,
"I have an idea, all this straw I shall spin,
But first give a promise, and then I'll begin."Grittel had to promise that after she and the king were married and had a child that she would give the child to the troll. Since she did not believe that the king would marry her at all, she made the promise.
So the troll went to work.
