ORIGIN OF THE CANOPY BEDS

The roof on l6th century houses had thatch,with no boards underneath. Animals would find warmth and protection in the thatch, and often made these places their homes.
The animals living in the thatched roof would sometimes fall into the house. If that happened while someone were sleeping, the person would get a nasty awakening. Thus, the canopy beds were invented. If an animal fell from the roof onto the bedroom it would fall on top of the canopy, not on the sleeping person.
